Coconut is often called the “tree of life”. It is used extensively in tropical countries such as Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka etc. The coconut is famous with the production of coconut oil and it becomes so popular. However, the production of corn oil and soy oil against coconut oil because coconut oil is believed to cause harmful to human because of high saturated fat content.



In Indian folk, coconut is considered as good valuable food because it can act as antiblenorrhagic, antibronchitis, febrifungal, and antigingivitis. In Ayurvedic medicine, the oil, milk, cream and water from the coconut are used to treat hair loss, burns and heart problems. An oil extraction comes from dried kernel and it consists of 65-75% oil. The oil is usually being used for cooking purposes. For instances, ingredients for making curry and chutney.

The coconut water is an excellent natural electrolytes, vitamins and minerals. It contains vitamin B3, vitamin B5, biotin, vitamin B2, folic acid, vitamin B1 and vitamin B6. In addition, it contains sugar, sugar alcohols, vitamin C, free amino acids, phytohormones, enzymes and growth promoting factors. The amino acid from coconut milk includes isoleucine, leucine, lysine, phenylalanine, tyrosine and cysteine. The coconut water contains inorganic ions includes potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. The high amount of potassium in coconut water is reported to lower blood pressure. Coconut water also can act as an antidote. It helps to eliminate poisons in case of mineral poisoning. In addition, L-arginine and vitamin C in coconut water give antioxidant effects.

The coconut oil is abundantly with medium chain triglycerides and it is absorbed directly from intestine to liver. In liver, it is rapidly metabolized for energy production and it does not involve in biosynthesis and transport of cholesterol. The monooctanoin is a digestion product of medium chain triglycerides. It is used for the dissolution of retained cholesterol gallstone following cholecystectomy. Coconut also can inactivate or kill some gram negative bacteria. The substances that have this ability is known as lauric acid and monolaurin. It also against any bacteria which can lead to stomach ulcers, sinusitis, cavities, food poisoning, and urinary tract infections. It also can give benefits to people who suffer with cholera.

The coconut oil also can act as antiviral. It is very effective against Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-barr, influenza, leukemia, pneumono and hepatitis C. The monolaurin in coconut can act as antifungal against Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp., and Cladosporium sp. In Mexican, coconut has shown the antiprotozoal activity by treating trichomoniasis. Other benefits of coconut are it can act as anticancer, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, disinfectant, insect repellent and eco-friendly biodiesel.
