Great Benefits of Strawberry

In Malaysia, Cameron Highland is a center of strawberry production. It is commercially and widely consumed fresh or in processed forms such as juices, ice creams, jellies and jams. According to NutriWeb Malaysia, it is estimated that 5 whole strawberries with average size have 11kcal. It is not a good main source of energy, but it contains 44g of water which is considered high.


Strawberry can be considered as a healthy food. It contains high levels of vitamin C which can express as a good antioxidant source for human. 5 whole strawberries have 24.5mg of vitamin C which can supply almost 35% of daily Malaysia Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI) for 19 years old and above in both gender. Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin which helps to prevent scurvy and common cold. Strawberries have a greater antioxidant capacity compared to apples, peaches, pears, grapes, tomatoes, oranges and kiwi. 

Strawberry is best known to have phenolic compounds such as anthocyanins and ellagitannins. In herbal medicine, anthocyanins have been used to treat many conditions including high blood pressure, colds and urinary tract infections. In fact, both phenolic compounds are good in reducing the risk of cancers. However, the phenolic compounds are varied throughout their growth and stage of ripening. 

In addition, the dietary fiber and fructose in strawberry may regulate blood sugar levels by slowing down the digestion and helps enhancing the satiety. There is one research stating that women who eat more than 3 servings of strawberries per week have 32% lower risk of having heart attack. The soluble fiber from strawberry has the ability to reduce the absorption of cholesterol into the body and prevent the occurrence of heart problems. Furthermore, strawberry is a source of several other vitamins, such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin K, vitamin A and vitamin E. Strawberry seed oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acid. It is mainly being used in beauty products because it moisturizes and protects the outer layer of skin.

Cereal and strawberries can be the best complementary food for breakfast. Strawberries also can be blended to make smoothies or shake. Or else, make them into salad for snacks. Just get fresh strawberries and include them in your meal in order to get health benefits.
